He is the father of media tycoon Conrad Black and Montegu Black. He attended preparatory school Appleby College of Oakville, Ontario in 1928, then took a short stint at McGill University before attending the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1933. He became a chartered accountant in 1937 and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He also worked at the Department of National Defence working on the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan from 1940 to 1945. In business, he became the comptroller of Western Breweries Limited and later with Canadian Breweries Limited for industrialist E. P. Taylor.
